Walker Fourball gets off to a flyer
Saturday saw qualifying for the Walker Fourball and the competition for the qualifying spots was hot with a few surprises with some who missed out. Top qualifiers were Ivan and Byron Karaitiana with a nett 58 which is an astounding effort. They were followed by Laurence Butler and Damian Kauika with a nett 60 and Stu Northe and Andre Rootman with nett 60. The first round of matches in the Walker Fourball is tis Saturday and there are some interesting match ups. The draw is at the end of this report.
Meanwhile Friday saw the inaugural Makes Cents Accounting Mixed American Foursomes Tournament which was played in amazing weather with everyone dressed for summer golf when it is supposedly winter. The winners of the gross were Damian Kauika and Anita Karaitiana with 74 and the runners up were Darryl and Michelle Coley with a gross 77. In the nett division the winners were Rod and Sandy Dravitzki with nett 58.5 and they romped home from runners up Ivan Karaitaiana and Di Hunter with nett 67.5. Longest drives on number 18 went to Jack McGlashan for the men and Nolene Stevenson for the ladies. The nearest the pin on number 6 went to Nolene Stevenson and number 17 to Ivan Karaitaiana. Maurice O'Reilly and Nolene Stevenson scored the only two of the day.
Saturdays competition was a medal round and in group one the winner was Ray Cocks with a nett 66, followed by Damian Kauika and Stu Northe on 69. In group two Laurence Butler had the round of the day and won the group with a nett 63, followed by Jeremy Harp with nett 66 and Ken Downing with a 72, Group three saw Kevin May finding some form and won the group on count back with a nett 67, from Paul Croft also on 67 and Robin Britt with 68. Holes in two were scored by Jason Walker and Stu Northe. The nearest to the pins went to Shane Stewart, Jason Walker, Ivan Karaitiana, Phil Granich and Laurence Butler.
Sunday saw a Stableford round played and the winner was Maurice O'Reilly with 38 points followed by Darryl Coley on 35 points and Greg Granich with 34 points. Holes in two were scored by Maurice O'Reilly and Darryl Coley.
Tuesday saw a good field of vets out on the course for their Stableford round. In the mens division the winners was Boidie Walker with 41 points and he was well in front of Roger Stenton with 35 and Doug Simpson with 33 points. The ladies division was taken out by Janet Shaw with 33 points from Betty Loader on 32 and Judith O'Connor with 31 points. Irene Phelps lead the nine holer's with 20 points from Gordon Wilton with 17. Nearest to the pins went to Roger Stenton, Janet Shaw and Doug Simpson.
This weekend sees a medal competition on Saturday and a Bisque par on Sunday. The ladies play the final round of the Tilson Salver on Sunday at Riversdale against Castlepoint. They hold a slender half point lead over Featherston with the rest of the field right behind. The club wishes them well for Sunday.
