Last Saturday saw both of the men’s teams in the Wellington cup competition playing the sixth round of
their competitions. The division A2 team were playing against Kapiti on their course, and the home advantage saw the Kapiti team secure 10 points to Mahunga’s 5. In spite of the scoreline the Mahunga team is still in second equal place, which is only one point behind the leading team.
The division B2 team were playing at home against the Shandon golf club, and they had a great result
with a 11 matches to 4 win. That result moved the Mahunga team up to third place in a very congested
scoreboard, with just 15 points between the top team in the bottom team.
The club competition at home on Saturday was a stableford round, which saw Noelene Stevenson and
Shane Hawkins share the top billing with 39 points each, with Ken Downing taking third place on 38
points.
The Makes Cents Accounting nearest to the pin on the first hole and the McAuleys transport Ltd one on
the sixth hole were both taken out by Shane Hawkins, while Noelene Stevenson took out the Liquorland
Masterton one on the third hole, Adam Lenz took the Alister Bruce Affordable Sheds one on the tenth
hole and Brett Sargent took out the Pak’N Save Masterton one on the eighth hole and the Dinah and
Deb Keats Professionals Real Estate one on the seventeenth hole. There were no holes in 2 scored on
the day.
The club competition on Sunday was another stableford round, which saw a tie at the top with Di
Hunter, Greg Granich and Chris Wenden all scoring 42 points, with Ray Cocks on 41 points and Darryl
Coley on 40 points missing out on the prize list. Once again there were no holes in 2 scored on the day.
On Tuesday the Mahunga veterans group played in a stableford round, with a number of players from
the Carterton golf club joining in the competition.
The best scores in the ladies group saw Judith O’Connor finished with 38 points and Maria Lauvi on 33
points. The 9 hole division saw both Irene Phelps and Gordon Wilton finished with 24 points.
The men’s group saw Peter Campbell came out on top with a total of 42 points, with the runners up spot
shared by Doug Simpson, Bevan Hefferen and Toby Hempelmen all finishing on 39 points, while the
Ormond finished with 38 points.
This coming Saturday sees both Dove trophy and Nichol cup matches being played. The club competition on the day is a par round which is also the third round of the Clarke Rosebowl competition.
