2016 Club Champions Found
It wasn't a great day weather wise for golf on Saturday and even more so for those playing in the Club Championship Finals. Persistent rain greeted the players at the start of the day and continued for most of the duration of the 36 hole matches. By the time the presentations were made to the Champions the course was bathed in sunshine. All in all the course held up well as did the resolve of the competitiors. Most matches were evenly contested apart from the odd exception. In the men's Open the clubs two top golfers played the final and Ivan Karaitiana came out a deserved winner over Brett Sargent which was a reversal of last years result. Both played good golf but Ivan relished the conditions and was always in control of the match. The men's Intermediate champion is Steve Walton who recorded and easy victory over Greg Granich. In the men's Junior A match Adam Lenz eventually prevailed in the tightest match of the day beating Robin Britt. The Ladies Handicap Championship match was played out between the mother and daughter combination of Anita Karaitiana and Cheycoda Cocks. Anita was the favourite with all her match play and golf experience and was expected to come out on top over 36 holes, but Cheycoda who is only in her second year of golf, was having none of that. Cheycoda played exceptionally well and recorded the easiest win of the day leading from the start. I am not sure though who was the proudest of the victory by Cheycoda, her or Anita. The Junior B Championship is played over 18 holes and Jack McGlashan came out on top over Bill Ousey. In the consolation events Laurence Butler won the Lusty Cup beating Byron Karaitiana, and Frankie Martin won the Brockett Cup by default due to an injury to Martin Andrew. Congratulations to all the winners.
Sunday was a Stableford round and Frankie Martin was an easy winner of the competition with 41 points from Terry Fleet and Paul Beech both on 36 points.
On Tuesday the vets played a Par competition and in the men's division Meki Lauvi was first on 7 up, followed by Ross Ireland on 6 up and Roger Stenton on 4 up. In the ladies division Maria Lauvi returned to form to take out the division on 1 up, followed by Janet Campbell all square, and Yvonne Allsworth and Nan McNae who were both 1 down. The 9 holers didn't have a good day with Gordon Wilton leading the way being all square while the rest were 3 down or worse. Nearest the pins went to Maria Lauvi, Janet Campbell and Meki Lauvi who got two of them.
This Saturday sees a club visit to Levin with the bus leaving Mahunga at 7.30am sharp. The club competition on Saturday is a South African Stableford. Sunday's competition will be a Stableford round and on Monday it will be a Par round. Don't forget to get your entries in for the 36 hole Wairarapa Men's Fourball Bestball on Saturday 5th November and the 18 hole 3 Person Ambrose on the 12th November. Entry sheets are in the foyer or ring the club to get your entry in. Enjoy the long weekend and good golfing.
