On Saturday the finals of the Mahunga Club Championships were played. All matches were over 36 holes apart from the men’s Junior B and the consolation matches in the Brocket & Lusty Cups. Most matches went a lot further than normal with most going to the 35th & 36th holes. The men’s senior match between Brett Sargent and Shane Mellor was a see-sawing match with the lead changing several times. Mellor was 2 up with two holes to play but Sargent birdied the 35th to send the match down the 36th hole. Mellor’s tee shot went down the middle while Sargent took the wide route down number 8 and found himself blocked by trees up by the green. A masterful shot saw him on the green for 3 as was Mellor. Mellor went first and had the harder putt but managed to sink his 20 footer and sealed the victory with birdie on the last. The intermediate match saw the lead change several times in the morning round but Roy Brider took the lead in the afternoon and was seemingly in control but once the match moved upstairs to the top holes Phil Archibald rallied and eventually got the upper hand and won the match on the 35th hole. In the Junior A match Derek Bentley seemed in control of the match at all times over Terry Adamson and Bentley finally managed to close the match out on the 35th hole for a well deserved victory. The Junior B match over 18 holes between Graham Duckett and Ian Grant actually ended up being over 21 holes before it concluded with Graham Duckett coming out with the victory. The ladies open matchplay championship final was also a tight tussle between Anita Karaitiana and Michelle Coley. The ladies played some good golf but it wasn’t until the 35th hole that Anita stamped her authority and gained the win. It was a great days golf and congratulations to all the winners.
On Tuesday the Vets played a stableford round and for the men Ken Downing was first with 35 points and he was well clear of Terry Adamson on 31 points. For the ladies Gloria Anderson was first with 24 points from Marai Lauvi with 22. Nearest the pins went to Maria Lauvi, Ken Downing and Meki Lauvi.
This Saturday sees the 6x6x6 mini tournament with 6 holes of fourball, 6 holes of ambrose and 6 holes of foursomes. Lots of fun so grab a partner and get up to the club.
