Mahunga Club Champions Crowned
Saturday saw the finals of the 2019 Mahunga Club Championships played. The weather was good, the course was in pristine condition and there was a good crowd following the matches throughout the day.
The men’s Open Championship was won by Troy Shaw who beat Ivan Karaitiana on the 32nd hole. It is the fourth year in a row that these two have played the final.
The ladies Silver Championship was a real family affair with Anita Karaitiana going to battle against daughter Cheycoda Cocks. Cheycoda prevailed in a good match winning on the 34th hole and her first words were “sorry Mum”.
The men’s Intermediate Championship saw one of Mahunga’s up and coming young guns up against experience when it comes to match play. But the young gun 18 year old Kavarn Walker who only started playing golf 6 months ago had the easiest win of the day beating Shane Stewart on the 30th hole.
The closest match of the day was the men’s Junior Final between Kevin Gibbs and Carl Cocks. Gibbs seemed to be in control of the match all day but Cocks didn’t give up and after being 4 down with 9 to play he rallied and eventually went down to Kevin Gibbs on the 35th hole.
In the 18 hole finals Bobby Kahui was an easy winner of the men’s Junior B Championship over Graham Duckett.
Roy Brider won the Lusty Cup with what he called “just another day at the office” over Graeme Dick. Congratulations to all our 2019 Club Champions.
The Club Competition on Sunday was a Stableford round and in group 1 Paul Beech had the round of the day scoring 43 points. He was followed by Jason Walker on 41 points and he edged out son Kavarn Walker also with 41 points. Steve Dick was next with 40 points. In group 2 Mike King scored 38 points and was first on count back from Laurence Butler also on 38. Maurice O’Reilly was next with 34 points followed by Ian Grant with 33 points. Holes in two were scored by Kavarn Walker and Laurence Butler.
This Saturday is an all irons Medal competition and on Sunday it is a Stableford round. This weekend sees a first for Wellington Golf and perhaps even for New Zealand golf with Mahunga’s mother and daughter Anita Karaitiana and Cheycoda Cocks representing Wellington and playing a quadrangular at Belmont Golf Club in Wanganui, where Wellington will come up against Hawkes Bay, Manawatu/Wanganui and Taranaki. It is the first time a mother and daughter has represented Wellington. Congratulations to you both for being selected and we know that you will do Mahunga and Wellington proud.
Maurice O'Reilly.
